Create Summary Activities

Use the Details tab to create summary activities.

Ways to access

• Click the Insert Activity icon on the Insert toolbar. Then click the Details tab in the Object Properties pane.

4. Beneath the toolbar, select a New Object Area in the Activity template list. You can always edit the activity’s visual characteristics in the Object Properties pane > Display tab later.

5. Create an activity in the time-distance cell by clicking and dragging a line/shape.

6. In the Object Properties pane > Details tab, edit the activity’s Name. Also select Summary Activity as the type on the same tab.

Create subordinate activities in a summary activity

1. Select an existing activity in a time-distance cell.

2. In the Object Properties pane > Details tab, select the Parent activity for this activity, which must be a summary activity. ...

or

1. Right-click an existing activity in a time-distance cell and select Activity Structure > Add activity to Summary.

Note on linking sub-activities in a summary activity: Unlinked child activities in a summary activity keep their positions. Activities under a summary activity are not moved if they start later than the earliest possible start date for the summary activity.

Convert an activity to a summary & define its sub-activities in a bar chart

1. Select the activity you want to convert into a new structure.

2. In the Object Properties pane > Details tab, select Summary Activity as the type.

3. Right-click the activity you just converted and select Open Summary in Gantt Chart. A Gantt chart for the summary activity opens in a new window.

4. On the Insert Toolbar, click the Insert Activity icon (or select Insert > Object > Activity in the menu) to create new activities.
   These new activities are automatically created as sub-activities. The distance coordinates of the new activities are set to the same values as the summary activity.

5. To return to the time-distance cell, close the Gantt chart.
